PHNOM PENH (Cambodia Herald) - The United Nations has apologized for flying the Cambodian flag upside down at the UN headquarters in New York earlier this month, sources said Wednesday.
It was not immediately clear who apologized, when the apology was made or whether any explanation was given.
On
July 3, the Cambodian permanent mission in New York wrote to the chief
of protocol and liaison service saying that the upside down flag had
been "detected" that morning.
The deputy chief of the service had agreed to take action "to immediately put the flag in the correct way," the letter said.
"Since
this omission by the United Nations will draw sharp criticism of the
media and the general public in the country, the Permanent Mission of
Cambodia would like to have an explanation in writing immediately and
also request that such a mistake will not be repeated in the future," it
added.
