SIHANOUKVILLE (Cambodia Herald) – A dead whale shark (Rhincodon typus) was found floating in waters off Sihanoukville Wednesday, local sources said.
They said a fisherman discovered the fish drifting near Dek Koul island and then transferred it to Tomnop Rolok.
Provincial Fisheries Administration chief Doung Sam Ath told the Cambodia Herald, an affiliate of Cambodia Express News, that the fish weighed about a ton and was five meters long.
He said residents were being prevented from slicing off flesh and that there were plans to bury the fish.
The whale shark is the world's largest fish and is considered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature as being vulnerable to extinction.
